Alps winter sports

One out of three winter sport overnight stays in Europe are being made in Austria, according to a survey.

Researchers Manova found that around a third of skiing holiday bookings registered in the European Alps occur in Austria. The agency said today (Weds) it also found every skier coming to Austria spent an average 104 Euros a day during the stay.

Winter sport tourists add 5.5 to 6.5 billion Euros of turnover to the Austrian economy per year, the research has shown. People from nine European countries including Austria, Germany, Poland and Italy, were questioned.

Manova said it saw "great potential" for the Austrian winter tourism industry in the Czech Republic, Russia and Poland. The agency claimed Austria should increase its marketing efforts in these countries.

The study also showed that nine out of 10 Romanian and Italian winter sport holidaymakers took vacations in their own countries.

Another aspect of the survey is that Austria has the highest share of active skiers among the surveyed countries. With 55 per cent it beats the Czech Republic and Russia which share second place (45 per cent).

Only 26 per cent of Germans said they were skiers. The country is, nevertheless, the most important market for Europe’s winter sport resorts since this share equals 16 million people.

Manova also said their research has shown that 38 million of the overall 500 million Europeans can envisage learning to skiing. Around one out of four Europeans practice the sport on a regular basis, according to the Vienna-based agency’s study.

The western province of Tyrol has been found the most popular Austrian winter sport destination in a recent poll by the Austrian Times. Almost three in every 10 readers of the online newspaper, which has an international readership, declared Tyrol as their preferred location. Salzburg came second (27.6 per cent) ahead of Styria (8.3 per cent), Carinthia (7.6 per cent) and Vorarlberg (6.2 per cent).

An overall 56.1 million overnight stays were registered between November 2009 and March 2010 across Austria, 1.3 per cent more then in the previous winter. Economists initially expected the number of stays to shrink due to the effects of the global economic crisis.

A recent IMAS poll revealed a majority of 54 per cent of Austrians could imagine spending less on their holidays, while only 11 per cent said they had considered selling valuables like jewellery in order to produce funds.
