Animal rights campaigners are calling for a crackdown on sick traders who are selling live duck eggs for the cooking pot.
The eggs - with fully developed embryos just days from hatching - are boiled with the unborn chicks' hearts still beating and eaten as a special delicacy, say watchdogs in Germany
The practice of "balut eggs" began with immigrants from the Philippines but has now spread throughout the country, claims Germany's Vier Pfoten (Four Paws) care group.
Animal rights investigator Markus Müller - who has exposed the trade in Germany - said: "In order to keep the embryos alive right up until the point of cooking, they are kept in a warm environment. "
Now he is asking police and animal cruelty authorities to halt the cruel trade. "This is straightforward animal cruelty and people have to ask themselves if it is right to throw a chick a day away from hatching into boiling water and then eat it," he said
