SAW

The Jigsaw killer never directly kills his victims. He instead places them within elaborately gruesome traps which he views as giving each victim a valuable life lesson – survive and you’ll appreciate what you’ve got a little more. However, chances of survival are often slim, so far only one victim has survived. Gordon knows of Jigsaw because five month previous he was a prime suspect in the case, being grilled by Detectives Tapp (Glover) and Sing (Leung). He was released after his alibi for one of the murders checked out.

After playing tapes given to them by the distorted-voiced killer, the pair find out that Dr Gordon has six hours to kill Adam or Jigsaw will murder his wife and daughter. As the men struggle to find a way out, new clues and puzzles emerge, as do facts that slowly reveal the two men may not be as unconnected as they first seemed. This puts a different perspective on their situation.

There is no melodramatic lead-in to Saw, it throws you straight into the middle of the story and never lets go till the final frame. The majority of the movie plays out in a harshly fluorescent “cell” with all the other action, save the final act, being told through flashbacks. This can make Saw seem strangely stagy, especially in the extended opening scene. It’s an unusual approach but it works well as the movie never once drags.

The flashbacks primarily focus on the detectives’ search for the killer as it goes tragically wrong. Although Danny Glover’s role amounts to nothing more than a supporting character, it’s nice to see him in a good movie for a change and not some lame fishing comedy with Joe Pesci. These scenes are all shot in dank, murky greens and yellows, and are probably the biggest contributor to this movie’s association with Se7en. It’s a fair comparison in visual style, if not execution. It is here, however, than Whannel’s script suffers most, relying a little too much on rule-bending cop stereotypes and a bit of convenience.
Saw is not for everyone. It can be gruesome and brutal, if that’s your thing, but that makes up a very small part of what it otherwise an interesting psychological thriller. It’s not perfect; with a little less hamming from some of the leads and a little script tweaking it could have been an excellent movie. But in a season full of unashamedly awful R-rated movies clearly aimed at 13 year olds (like Resident Evil: Apocalypse), Saw is a refreshingly grim and cynical film for adults only.

Post The Human Centipede Reply with quote
Two American college girls become the subjects of a sadistic medical experiment while on a road trip across Europe. Invited to a party by a handsome waiter, Jenny and Lindsay are en route to the festivities when their car breaks down in the middle of nowhere. Desperate, they decide to seek help on foot, eventually coming across the home of a retired surgeon named Dr. Heiter (Dieter Laser). Dr. Heiter is internationally renowned for his work on separating conjoined twins, but these days he's using his surgical skills for something entirely different. His goal is to create a human centipede by removing his patient's kneecaps, and sewing them together, mouth-to-anus. The only thing preventing Dr. Heiter from carrying out his experiment is a lack of human subjects. When Jenny and Lindsay arrive on his doorstep, Dr. Heiter enthusiastically begins prepping for surgery.

FROZEN

Director Adam Green (Hatchet, Spiral) takes the helm for this relentlessly tense tale of three snowboarders who must fight for their lives in the freezing cold after getting stranded on a ski lift. As the trio rides up the mountain in preparation for their final run of the day, the night lights suddenly go dark, and the lift chairs grind to a sudden halt. Realizing that the resort will be closed until the following weekend, the three friends decide to take their fate into their own hands, and find their way down to terra firma. Once they do, they realize that hypothermia isn't the only thing they have to fear.

BABYSITTER WANTED

A devoutly religious college student seeking to escape her roommate and make a little extra cash becomes the target of a disfigured serial killer who stalks his helpless prey from outside of darkened rural windows. Having recently struck out on her own and found, Angie is eager to begin life away from her overbearing Catholic mother and support herself with a suitable job. One day, while passing by a campus bulletin board, Angie notices an ad for a babysitter and contacts the family to see if the position is still open. Before Angie knows it, she's arriving at the Stanton family's scenic farm and being introduced to their adorable little boy. Her job is simple: watch after the sleeping boy until his parents return. But the Stanton's house is enormous, and it isn't long before Angie is at the mercy of her own fears. Suddenly, the serine country silence is broken by the ringing telephone. But who is the anonymous caller on the other end? As if the frightening telephone calls weren't enough to shred Angie's nerve, now there's a mysterious figure lurking around in the darkness outside. There's a killer stalking this small town, and it doesn't take Angie long to realize that the same person who's peering in at her through the window is likely the same creep who's been butchering the local girls for months. As the tension begins to build and the situation turns threatening, Angie realizes that her only hope for survival is to fight back with everything she's got and hope that the local sheriff (Bill Moseley) will get to the farm before it's too late.

HOSTEL

Hostel" is mistyped as a backpacker movie -- it's really just your basic horror movie in which your basic obnoxious business travelers torture backpackers to death for fun in your basic Slovakian hostel basement. Spoiler: in an amazingly unexpected twist, heroic American student traveler escapes after saving Asian gal while American biz traveler is drilling out her eyeballs.
